An Unusual Letter to the Nigerian Music Industry
Dear Nigerian music artists,
Before September 2023, I had never paid any real attention to the music industry in my life.
As a practising Muslim, born to a medical-director father and an educated businesswoman mother in 1997, I was raised on Islamic knowledge from childhood. I grew up knowing with full conviction that music is haram (forbidden) — just like alcohol or any other forbidden thing.
So I avoided it completely.
But everything changed in 2023.
Yes, I always knew that a “music industry” existed, but I genuinely didn’t know anything about it. For example, I had no idea musicians made money by performing on stage. I didn’t know artists organised shows. I swear by Allah that I only learned about streaming apps after the spiritual encounter I experienced in 2023.
And it’s not about a lack of exposure — I hold multiple online certifications, and I spend a lot of time on the internet. I simply had no idea that that entire side of the internet even existed. Zero awareness.
So why am I writing now?
Because three things happened:
- a dream,
- a physical experience, and
- the death of Mohbad.
Well… not exactly his death as a whole, but one specific part of it:
the lie they told — that he died of an “ear infection.”
Yes. That lie.
That single detail was what I saw on my newly created Facebook account. It was a suggested post. And strangely, that lie about an ear infection became the key that unlocked the meaning of a dream I had.
And that was where my journey into the music industry began.
As an autistic person, whenever something captures my interest, I study it exhaustively. So I started digging — deeply.
I began by watching every interview Mohbad ever gave.
Then I widened my search: the history of music, the history of Nigerian music, and especially the Afrobeat industry.
And after everything I’ve read, watched, and pieced together, I have come to a conclusion that is as clear as daylight:
Music is one of the strongest instruments Satan uses to destroy the world — and melody is one of the greatest instruments the Almighty uses to enlighten the hearts of His creation.
