Tajweed and tongue tie (it is possible to have a tongue tie without knowing): Lesson 3

BismiLLAH AlhamduliLLAH

Tajweed Journey | Vol. 3  (Do you know that it's possible to have a tongue tie without realising it?)

Memorising Before Tajweed (Here's why)

Throughout my life, I've always struggled with Tajweed and I couldn't figure out why.

Until, I discovered recently, at 28, that I have a tongue tie.

In order to save other people from what I struggled with, I decided to write this letter.

So here it goes....

You need your tongue to pronounce 17 of the Arabic alphabets.

If you have a tongue tie, you won't be able to pronounce them properly.

It doesn't matter how hard you try or how long your Tajweed teacher trains you.

So here's the problem.

It is possible to have a tongue tie without knowing. I am a chief example of this.

Look at the image above. According to that image, the severe tongue tie is extremely obvious. It is called an anterior tongue tie. If you have it you'll know. Doctors will also know.

Where the problem lies is the posterior tongue tie (the moderate tongue tie).

That is when the back of your tongue is tied. It isn't obvious.

With the “moderate” type, you'll still be able to speak “normally”.

And that is the problem.

If you have it, you'll be frustrated. Your Tajweed teacher will be frustrated. However, both of you will have no idea why.

Whenever your teacher says, “make your tongue straight”, everyone in your class will be able to get it. But not you.

So how will you know if you have a tongue tie.

First step, open your mouth. Step two, suck your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Step three, now look into the mirror.

Did you see anything?

As for me, the back of my tongue is tied.

I have a posterior (postural) tongue tie.

Again, the back of my tongue is tied.

I just found out through the thoughtspot222 on YouTube.

For me, it's looks like the “moderate tongue tie” in the image above.

I literally asked my Mum to open her mouth and her tongue isn't tied at all.

I also asked my brother to open his mouth and his tongue isn't also tied.

Their tongues fall into the “normal” category according to the image above.

For me, my tongue is tied at the back.

Doctors find this difficult to diagnose.

They don't learn about this in school.

The type of tongue tie they know about is the anterior tongue tie.

If the back of your tongue is tied, you might never be able to recite the Qur'an properly in your life.

You'll always struggle in Tajweed class.

This type of tongue tie means you can still speak “normally”.

But you ain't speaking “properly” at all.

The worst part is that nobody will suspect anything because your speech will be so clear.

This is the posterior tongue tie.

The good news is that it can be cut.

The tongue tie can be released. It doesn't matter whether it is a class one or class two or class three tongue tie. Even the class four tongue tie — the worst one — can also be released.

So don't panic, the tongue tie can be released.

Again, you can fall into the “normal” category.

So make duaa. If you have money, book an appointment. Get your myofunctional therapy done and then go get your tongue tie released and you can now master Tajweed with the permission of ALLAH.

You actually need to get your myofunctional therapy done. Because that's where you'll learn — for the first time in your life — the right way to swallow without thrusting your tongue.

You'll learn what people without tongue tie have been doing from birth.

You need to do the myofunctional therapy so that your neck and back will stop flexing whenever you want to swallow anything/speak.

This is also where you'll learn how to have proper tongue posture. This is also where you'll learn how to breathe from the diaphragm without your neck and upper body moving — you really need this for a perfect Tajweed.

If you don't have money for the myofunctional therapy and tongue tie release, please pray. Verily, ALLAH is the best of providers. Perhaps, HE will provide money soon or in the future.

Perhaps, HE has chosen you to recite the Qur'an with that tongue tie. Whatever the case may be. Verily, all praises belong to ALLAH.

Personally, I haven't started my myofunctional therapy and I definitely haven't released my tongue tie. So in the next episodes expect updates.

This has been the 2 Minutes Tajweed for today.
