An Introduction: Who's Hamidah?

 Welcome to the letters of an autistic author and artist | Let me take you into the mind of a slave of ALLAH who's always wanted the best for all

Dear Readers,

I am Hamidah Abbas, the autistic Author of Hamidah Abbas Letters.

Autistic people are people who often read everything about any topic they're interested in.

Autistic people have also been described as “people with stronger sense”.

So all praises  to Almighty ALLAH who has bestowed the gift of autism and the honour of education on me throughout the years.

First of all,

I'd like to acknowledge the provisions of ALLAH — especially the huge book titled The Family Structure in Islam written by Dr. Hammudah 'Abd al-`Ati.

I used to be very addicted to that book as a child. SubhanaLLAH. I was an extremely strange child.

I would carry the book with me (as huge as it is) on errands. SubhanaLLAH, that book is not a pamphlet.

I would run to my teacher’s house (Umm Maryam) to ask questions whenever my mum sent me on an errand.

I didn’t really realise how strange I was and how strong my obsession with this subject is.

Well, well, all praises belong to ALLAH who has prepared me by HIMSELF and hasn’t allowed anyone to prepare me except through HIM.

SubhanaLLAH! How far from imperfections is ALLAH!

I didn’t intentionally decide to name this letter after Dr. Hammudah’s work — in fact, I think years have passed since I last read it.

However, the book is such a part of me that I ended up modelling after it.
It was long after I’d written this title — The Family Structure from ALLAH — before it clicked that I had been inspired by ALLAH through Dr. Hammudah’s work. SubhanaLLAH!

Nobody advised me to read Dr. Hammudah’s work; I was just obsessed with the subject and reading everything. As a child, I even read Abul A‘la al-Maududi’s book on divorce.

SubhanaLLAH, I’ve been on this subject since I could read. La ilaha illa ALLAH!

Again, how far from imperfections is ALLAH! Verily, HE perfects HIS preparations with absoluteness!

I still remember my classmates laughing in mockery and jest when they found out I was reading that book of Shari‘ah (Islamic law) on divorce.
Well, I can’t blame them.

We were young, and my seriousness was irritating — I was too much of a nerd obsessed with “grown-up” stuff.
Well, well, it’s not my fault.

Almighty ALLAH made me interested in the subject.
People show hate as if I decided to be interested in it!
It was Almighty ALLAH who chose an autistic focused interest for me!

Anything on gender, polygamy, family, divorce — I read! Nobody in my class was reading this stuff.
So all praises belong to ALLAH — and in the name of ALLAH, The Most High,
The One who taught man by the pen. HE taught man that which he didn’t know!…

Background 

I have always been a genuine seeker of answers. A thinker. An attentive person of reflection. In order to paint a complete picture, I'll tell you two stories from highschool.

Story One: I was published.

Led by genuine concern, at the age of 13, I submitted three articles to at-Taleem magazine — and SubḥānAllāh, all three were accepted and published. All. Three. Not one was rejected. AlhamduliLLAH.

For context, at-Taleem is a publication of IIRO, Saudi Arabia, Ibadan (UQHS regional office). Two of my submissions were Islamic-themed, while the third was titled “Agriculture in Nigeria Today.”

Years later, I went on to earn a degree in Agricultural Science at Africa’s very first university of agriculture — and the 7th university of agriculture in the world, FUNAAB. 

The subject of my research was AGRONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF SOYBEAN (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) SOWN AFTER SESAME IN AN ORGANIC CROP ROTATION SYSTEM.

So you can imagine my joy and surprise when the Federal Government of Nigeria signed an export agreement of one million tons of soybeans with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. SubḥānAllāh — of all crops, it was soybean.

 Moving on to the second story.

Story two: Once Upon a Hadith Question

My copy of the Quran till today was a gift by the Director of Ummul-Qura Institute. It was one the many gifts that I received on that beautiful afternoon from various teachers, principal, and members of staff, including, ultimately, the director of the institute.

SubhanaLLAH. It all started with a simple Hadith question that no one was able to answer, I answered and several teachers were so excited they started raining gifts on me. And even those who couldn't give me a gift, made a pledge. I can only describe the excitement of my teachers upon my correct answer, as euphoric. 

It was so simple. It was supposed to be a normal afternoon after Salah in the school field. However, for some reasons, as Almighty ALLAH has decreed, an Hadith question was asked and it became a big deal because no one was able to answer correctly.

So all praises belong to ALLAH who has bestowed the success and honour of successfully answering the question on me. It was a collective gathering of students of knowledge and high school students. I was a normal High school student who studied Islam in Yorùbá and English languages. I wasn't part of the Islamic Diploma students who studied Islam in Arabic language only. I was a simple highschool student. All I'm trying to say is that I am a simple believer who Almighty ALLAH has given the gift of autism and understanding. So all praises belong to ALLAH for the blessings of the day of the Hadith question.

Hamidah Abbas Letters is an author’s business where I teach fellow Muslims the micro-topics that I've been blessed to research thoroughly as an autistic Muslimah. My areas of interest are Tajweed, salvation, family and society in Islam, and “do not believe any knowledge worker blindly”

As an author (thought artist/knowledge worker), I go to a digital studio with a lot of art supplies (web pages, softwares, digital tablet, internet, search engines, electricity, etc). I sit with my digital studio inside a physical studio provided by ALLAH, on a chair and a table provided by ALLAH, with a pen, paper, and book. All of these come from ALLAH. By ALLAH, I am sincerely grateful for the miracle of each of these provisions. AlhamduliLLAH! AlhamduliLLAH! AlhamduliLLAH.

I am an artist.
