Why I call myself an Artist

Why I call Myselt an Artist BismiLLAH AlhamduliLLAH I am Hamidah Abbas , an Islamic thinker. I completed the Muslim Intellectual Development Program (Sharī'ah Intelligence Training) on 17 June 2026 . The five-day training was held at Bayseone Hall, opposite the NASFAT praying ground, Samonda, Ibadan, Oyo State. It was organised by the Da'wah Institute of Nigeria, Islamic Education Trust (IET), Minna, in collaboration with the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN). As a thinker, I have many interests and areas of research. However, my core area of interest is gender and polygamy in Islam . A simple way to summarise everything I do is: Spreading light. Whether it is “music”, salvation, agriculture, gender and polygamy in Islam, or society, my objective has always been to make things a little brighter than they were before. For me, it has always been light over darkness . I am from Ìbàdàn, Oyo State, Nigeria . I hold a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the Fed...

Why I Chose Authorship Over Social Media

Why I Chose Authorship Over Social Media

BismiLLAH AlhamduliLLAH

Social media is an amazing place to create.

For many people, it is exactly where they belong.

I genuinely believe that people who naturally thrive on social media are journalists by nature. My theory is that those humans are what I call “The Journalist Type”. They enjoy reporting and commenting on current events, sharing updates, and producing a steady stream of content. Society benefits tremendously from their work.

But I don't think everyone is built that way.

If you're a thinker, philosopher, researcher, or someone whose natural inclination is to write books, essays, or long-form reflections, social media may not be your ideal place to create.

I'm talking to those whose art involves thinking intensely and deeply, reading, writing, listening, researching, and reflecting.

In other words, those who didn't choose to live the life of the mind. Rather, they were created and built to live the life of the mind.

For people like us, long-form mediums may be a better fit.

Perhaps that's YouTube.

Perhaps it's a podcast.

Perhaps it's a newsletter.

Perhaps it's a personal website.

Perhaps it's a collection of Google Docs shared with the world.

Perhaps it's simply publishing digital books.

The medium matters less than whether it gives your mind room to breathe.

Sometimes we feel guilty because we benefit from social media without giving back there.

However,

you do not need to become a doctor just to give back to the hospital that you benefitted from.

You do not need to become a pilot just to give back to the airline that you travelled with.

Therefore, you do not need to become a social media creator just to give back knowledge on social media.

To give back to the society, simply do what you know how to do best.

Maybe that's farming, being of best character. Being cheerful. Calling attention to danger, etc.

Again, you do not need to create on social media just because you benefit from it.

Ask yourself this:

If the internet had never existed, how would I naturally have shared my ideas?

If your answer is, "I would have written books," then perhaps you should still be writing books.

If your answer is, "I would have taught classes," perhaps create lectures.

If your answer is, "I would have written articles for newspapers or magazines," perhaps blogging is your home.

Social media is not the destination.

It is only one medium among many.

I have chosen authorship over social media, even though it is easier to grow on social media.

That doesn't mean I dislike social media.

It simply means I know where my mind feels most at peace.

So all praises belong to ALLAH for my digital books on gender and polygamy in Islam.

My responsibility is to keep producing beneficial work with sincerity.

Certainly, all praise belongs ALLAH alone.

If you're still searching for your creative home, my advice is simple:

Don't choose the medium that promises the biggest audience.

Choose the one that allows you to do your best thinking.

May Almighty ALLAH guide each of us to the work, and the medium, through which we can best benefit humanity.

Sincerely,

Hamidah Sẹ̀gílọlá Abbas (HSA)
