Thinkers and Scholars
BismiLLAH AlhamduliLLAH
A lot of Muslims don't quite understand that there are two types of intellectuals: the thinkers and the scholars.
Practicing philosophy, or philosophising, is simply the art of thinking deeply. As Muslims, the Qur'an and Sunnah are our boundaries as we practice the art of philosophy.
There are so many people in the world who philosophise based on what different human writers wrote. When you listen to some of their thoughts, it is a direct contradiction to the Qur'an and Sunnah. In fact, sometimes these thinkers straight up blaspheme the Almighty Owner of the world. So yes, we must stay away from their thoughts and philosophy.
We have our own thoughts and philosophy, and it is based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. So when they tell you to stay away from philosophy, they are not telling you to stay away from thinking, because that is impossible for a human with a sound mind. What they are telling you is to stay away from the bad philosophy and thoughts of these people. Sometimes, even these people have good philosophy and thoughts.
Certainly, Ibn Qayyim is a deep thinker. Similarly, when they say you should stay away from religion, they are warning you about the false religion, not Islam.
So yes, we Muslims, people who submit to God, have more right to philosophise than anyone else, because who are we not to use the intellect given to us by ALLAH?
Imaam Al-Ghazali is a thinker. He never claimed to be a scholar.
One of my favourites after the Companions, Ibn Qayyim, is clearly both a thinker and a scholar.
A great thinker.
One of the greatest thinkers.
And certainly, all praises belong to ALLAH and ALLAH knows best.
May the peace of ALLAH be upon all Muslims.
Sincerely,
