Peace Be Upon You for What You Patiently Endured
BismiLLAH AlhamduliLLAH
When my grandfather died, I had this overwhelming urge to say taslīm to his shrouded body in the van just before the Janāzah was conducted.
And I did.
Over and over.
Over and over.
Nonstop.
There was no one there except the security personnel surrounding him.
Everyone else was inside his mosque—UMB, Agodi Gate, Ibadan—preparing to move him for the Janāzah.
The security personnel tried to console me as I kept repeating the salām aloud.
But I wasn't grieving, and I didn't need to be consoled.
I just wanted to say the taslīm.
Or rather, let me say I felt an overwhelming need to say the taslīm.
I am sharing this story because today I came across the following report.
SubḥānaLLĀH.
I cried.
Ibn ʿUmar (may ALLAH be pleased with him and his father) would, whenever he was present at the death of a family member or relative, uncover the person's face and say:
"Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured."
— ʿAbd al-Razzāq, al-Muṣannaf (1983), Vol. 3, p. 410
Indeed, all praises belong to ALLAH.
Sincerely,
Hamidah Sẹ̀gílọlá Abbas (HSA)
